Common Jasmine (Jasminum officinale)
Common Jasmine
Jasminum officinale
🌿 Description
A classic, vigorous climber with fine, feathery green leaves and clusters of pure white, intensely fragrant flowers. Blooming from early summer into autumn, its sweet scent is strongest in the evening, making it a timeless favorite in Lebanese homes and gardens.
🏡 In the Garden
Ideal for walls, fences, pergolas, arches, balconies, and entrances. Perfect for covering structures with soft greenery and fragrance, and lovely in large pots on terraces and near seating areas.
☀️ Light
Prefers full sun to partial shade. More sun encourages more abundant flowering and a stronger fragrance.
🌡️ Climate & Elevation
Well adapted to most regions of Lebanon, from sea level to around 1,200–1,400 m. In colder mountain areas it may lose its leaves in winter and regrow quickly in spring. Reliable outdoor hardiness generally corresponds to USDA Zones 7–10.
💧 Watering
Water regularly, especially during summer and flowering. Once established, it tolerates moderate drought, provided the soil drains well.
✂️ Maintenance
Prune after flowering to control its vigorous growth, thin crowded stems, and keep the plant tidy. Guide and tie young stems onto supports to direct growth.
💡 Plant Express Tip
Plant Common Jasmine close to windows, doorways, or evening seating areas to enjoy its fragrance at its best. Its fast growth makes it an excellent choice for quickly covering a pergola or fence.
