Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea hybrids
🌿 Description
A vigorous, sun-loving climbing shrub famous for its spectacular, papery bracts in vivid shades of magenta, red, pink, orange, purple, and white. It produces generous waves of color from spring to late autumn, bringing a true Mediterranean feel to any garden.
🏡 In the Garden
Ideal for walls, fences, pergolas, arches, balconies, and entrances. Excellent for covering large surfaces with color, cascading over walls, or growing in large pots on sunny terraces.
☀️ Light
Requires full sun. The more direct sunlight it receives, the more abundant and vibrant its flowering.
🌡️ Climate & Elevation
Best suited to warm, frost-free coastal areas of Lebanon, generally from sea level to around 600–700 m. It may grow higher against sheltered, sunny walls, but frost can damage the foliage and young stems. This is a warm-climate plant, with reliable outdoor hardiness generally corresponding to USDA Zones 9–11.
💧 Watering
Water regularly while establishing. Once established, it is highly heat- and drought-tolerant. Overwatering encourages leaves at the expense of flowers.
✂️ Maintenance
Prune after each flowering wave to control size, shape the plant, and encourage new flowering shoots. Provide support and tie stems when training on walls or pergolas. Wear gloves, as the stems are thorny.
💡 Plant Express Tip
Bougainvillea flowers best when it is not overfed or overwatered. Use a fertilizer low in nitrogen and rich in potassium, and let the soil dry slightly between waterings for a spectacular display of color.
